About the troop

We are a backpacking-style, high-adventure, Scout-led troop.

  • We were chartered in 1961 and have been sponsored by Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Springfield, VA since 1966.

  • We have 55-60 scouts on the roster and most of these scouts are active participants in Troop meetings, events, and activities.

  • We have more than 200 scouts who have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Generally, we have 4-6 scouts working to achieve this rank each year.

  • We have adults on the roster and they assist the Troop in many different ways, such as scoutmaster, assistant scoutmasters, and troop committee members. The Troop needs the support of many adults to run efficiently.

  • There is also a venture program for older scouts that meets at Kirkwood.

  • We are part of the Burke Lake District in the National Capital Area Council.

More details about the troop…

  • Our Troop meetings are on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:00 PM, in the fellowship hall of the church. Our calendar follows the Fairfax County Public School calendar. If Fairfax County Public Schools either cancels school or afternoon/evening activities due to inclement weather, then any scheduled Troop meeting/activity is also cancelled.

  • Our scouts participate in summer camps and high adventure activities in July and August.

  • We currently have several Eagle Scouts actively helping out the Troop as Jr. Assistant Scoutmasters or Assistant Scoutmasters.

  • We have three Scout-led Courts of Honor (fall, winter, spring) each year. There are separate Court of Honor ceremonies for the Eagle rank.

  • We schedule, plan, and conduct Troop outdoor activities every month.

    • On most weekend campouts, the food cost is $5.00 per meal.

    • Parents are welcome to attend and participate in campouts and activities.

  • For fundraising, we hold two pancake breakfasts, one in the fall and one in the spring for scouts to earn money to defray the costs of summer camp/activities and for the Troop general fund for operating expenses.

  • For new scouts…

    • Scout rank is typically earned within the first two months of a scout joining our Troop.

    • We conduct a New Scout Campout in late March or early April each year for all new scouts.

      • At this campout, new scouts learn and complete most of their Tenderfoot rank requirements and some of their Second and First Class rank requirements.

    • Summer Camp (one week) is strongly encouraged if they don't want to be behind their peers in rank advancement.
